EUI Design Competition Winners: 2023 Epidemic Urbanism International Design Competition

Stephen Muwanguzi & Essy Tracy Atuk

Epidemics are as old as cities themselves. The COVID-19 pandemic has put into perspective the impact of epidemic illness on urban life and exposed the vulnerabilities of the societies it ravages as much as the bodies it infects. How can epidemics help us understand urban environments? What insights from the outbreak and response to previous urban epidemics might inform our understanding of COVID-19? How might we articulate and reflect on the ways in which COVID-19 has shaped and continues to shape urban life, institutions, communities, and the built environment? How can we leverage these insights to better prevent and more justly intervene in future pandemics? To answer these questions, the Epidemic Urbanism Initiative (EUI), founded by Drs. Mohammad Gharipour and Caitlin DeClercq, has hosted four international conferences and interviewed visionary scholars, practitioners, and leaders, all of which you can view on this site. See epidemicurbanism.com for more information about the EUI.

In 2023, the Epidemic Urbanism Initiative called a design competition based on healthcare in the categories of Community Health Center and Emergency Treatment Center. Submitting teams were asked to focus on adaptive reuse of local sites and spaces, and to include members from design and healthcare at various stages of their careers.
