Faculty of the Built Environment (FoBE)
The Faculty of the Built Environment (FoBE) (formerly Building Technology and Architecture FBTA) started in September 2000 with support from the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) grant, in collaboration with Ghent University.
It is a multidisciplinary faculty offering programmes and courses with an emphasis on environmental conscious design (ECD), a key goal of the faculty is to educate responsible professionals who can contribute to cultural and socio-economic development and change in East Africa and the global community through participation in design, construction and interpretation of built environments.
The programme is a two-tier structure modeled upon emerging trends to allow students venture into several fields of Building Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Design and Building Technology to mention but a few.
The flagship undergraduate programme, the Bachelor of Environmental Design (Honours) (B.Envi.Des) is the basis for academic study in the faculty, and serves as the basic programme leading into a Master’s degree in Architecture (Professional) ( M.Arch. (Prof)). Students can also opt for Master’s degrees in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Business Administration, Urban Planning, Animation and Film Making, Project Planning and Management, and Engineering.
The Bachelor of Environmental Design (Honours) serves as Part I of the three-year professional programme in architecture, and is a prerequisite for the Master of Architecture (Professional) programme (Part II), a two-calendar year programme for students seeking to become professional architects.
Both courses are recognised and validated by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) https://unche.or.ug/, the Uganda Society of Architects (USA), and the Architects Registration Board (ARB) https://arbuganda.go.ug/.
The programme is also validated by the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) https://commonwealtharchitects.org, and on the CAA list of Qualifications in Architecture recommended for recognition.
